Bibliography:
Some terrific, accessible books relevant to the Unit The World of Odysseus, by M. I Finley. An old one, but still a classic of clarity and concision: an account of the "dark ages" of early Greece. The Greeks and the Irrational, by E. R. Dodds. An amazing book, one of those classics that changed the way I regarded the ancient Greeks forever. The Greeks, by H.D.Kitto. Old (1950), but still one of the most lucid, comprehensive works on what makes the Greeks unique. |

for Unit 2 Take a stroll through the Parthenon
There's a moderately good website that provides a guided tour of the Parthenon and the Acropolis in Athens. Check it out by clicking here. "Sing, muse, of the wrath of Achilles..."
Ancient Greek Music! It's odd to think, but much of what we know of as Greek poetry was actually song lyrics. The Iliad and the Odyssey were sung, not recited. It's just that we never knew what ancient Greek music sounded like... until now! Click here to check out this amazing video of a group of scholars at Oxford who are recreating ancient Greek music. Would you add it to your playlist? Take a walk through ancient Greece...
The embarrassingly-named game, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is actually an amazing, high-res and historically kinda accurate depiction of Ancient Greece. So much so that the company that makes the game, Ubisoft, has released an "educational" mode, where you can stroll through the massive recreation and interact with various experts -- and not be bothered by any pesky quests or battles. Click here for a review of Odyssey's educational mode (and maybe try it out?). Readings for this Unit
