Hebrews and Romans on the Silver Screen
Hollywood has long been fascinated by these two cultures -- the way that they shaped each other and often clashed. There's a standing opportunity for some extra credit if you watch one of these old classics and write up a review. The Ten Commandments. This is it -- the big-budget Cecille B. DeMille spectacular, with Charlton Heston playing one angry Moses. Ben Hur. Charlton Heston, again, but this time playing a hebrew citizen of Rome who must choose between three cultural players -- Rome, Judaism, and a little upstart sect that follows an obscure prophet named Jesus Christ. Monty Python's The Life of Brian. If you're tired of the highly serious depictions of these feuding cultures, watch this. A young man caught between clashing cultures -- Rome, Judaism, and a little upstart sect that follows an obscure prophet named Brian... Cleopatra. Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, Richard Burton as Mark Antony. Not very historical, but the two stars got together after this film was made... Gladiator. Russell Crowe's fighter-with-integrity takes on the corrupt Caesars. I, Claudius (1970's TV series focusing on the corrupt palace intrigues of Rome shortly after the death of Augustus Caesar). Rome (Big budget HBO series focusing on the rise of Julius Caesar in season 1, and the rise of his nephew Octavian / Augustus in season 2). |
